My solution to avoid abandonment or separation of pets from owners is Emergency Preparedness Kits. If pet owners are prepared and have one of these kits, the safety and well-being of both the pet and the owner is ensured during a disaster or emergency. I have created a video that describes the contents of the kit in more depth.
Contents of the Kits
Below are images, links, and descriptions to all items and materials mentioned in the informative video. By providing clear information, I aim to help make the preparation process for pet owners easier.

Contact Card
I recommend creating a laminated contact card as it is essential for being prepared for disasters. On a contact card I recommend to research and find names of local organizations that can assist you and your pet in the case of an emergency. Listing organizations like shelters, veterinary clinics, and first responders will be helpful in an emergency as the information will be easily accessible.
Drawstring Bag
This bag is the perfect size to fit all the materials needed. You can also use any type of backpack; however I have listed the drawstring bag because I think it is easy, durable, and affordable. It is completely up to you and your accessibility.
Small Plastic Water Bottle
You will need water to help both you and your animal stay hydrated. You never know how long you and your pet will have to go without water during an emergency. You could also use a collapsible water bowl as well.
Small Bag of Dried Food
You want to make sure that your pet will be able to eat something. Being prepared with a bag of food will ensure that your pet can eat something whenever they need, as you have it accessible. I recommend having dry food in your kit since it lasts longer than wet food.
Pet ID Tag
Keeping a pet ID tag will be helpful during a disaster or emergency. Your pet should already have some type of identification tags, and keeping a spare will be helpful for contact information. It can also be useful if you happen to be separated from your pet.
Pet Microchip ID
Your pets should be microchipped by your veterinarian. I recommend that you list the microchip ID number with your other important pet documents such as your pet's rabies tag with the number and date. This allows for easy identification and confirmation that this is your pet.
Proof of Vaccination and Ownership
I recommend keeping a copy of these documents, and I would recommend them to be laminated to prevent damage. If you are going to a shelter, they may ask for vaccination records. Thinking ahead and already having these documents prepared will be helpful in making sure there are no complications or trouble for you or your pet.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen Peroxide is useful for disinfecting and cleaning minor cuts, crapes, and bruises. Keeping a small container of this will be helpful in case your pet gets injured.
Tick Remover
Ticks can carry diseases and pose health risks, so having an indispensable tool for dealing with a tick will come in handy. The tick remover I recommend is especially good because it is designed to gently grasp the tick at its head and safely lift it out without leaving any mouthparts embedded in the skin. This reduces the chance of infection and minimizes the risk of tick-borne illnesses, making it an essential tool for an emergency kit.
Tweezers
Tweezers come in handy for a variety of tasks such as removing splinters, thorns, or debris from wounds that could lead to infection. Having tweezers easily accessible will make sure your pet remains safe and health in the case of an emergency.
Sterile Pads
Sterile pads are highly absorbent and made of soft materials designed to cover and protect wounds. They prevent contamination, reduce the risk of infection, and help absorb any fluids or blood from the wound site. Having sterile pads on hand will help prevent infection and make sure your pet maintains proper wound hygiene.
Self-Adhesive Bandage Wrap
Self-adhesive bandage wrap is a practical material for securing dressings and providing support to injured areas. Because the material is self-adhesive, it is more efficient since it does not require additional clips or tape. The wrap also provides compression to control swelling and reduce bleeding. It offers flexibility and allows for movement without compromising its stability. These reasons prove why this wrap is an ideal material for your pet in the event something happens.
Antiseptic Cleansing Liquid
Antiseptic liquid kills bacteria. It is safe and easy to use. It promotes healing, reduces risk of complications, cleans and disinfects wounds, and kills microorganisms. All these things help your pet stay safe and healthy in the even of injury.
Neosporin Antibiotic Ointment
Neosporin helps with antibacterial properties meaning the antibiotics work together to kill a wide range of bacteria. This prevents infection, promotes healing, and reduces scarring. It's petroleum based, allowing for moisturization, soothing, and easy application.
Benadryl
Benadryl has many uses and is widely available: it is a topical application for itching, it helps with motion sickness and nausea, it serves as an allergy relief and a histamine blocker. Benadryl could also help your pet if they are feeling anxious or tense as it also has a sedative effect. It is commonly used in veterinary practices across the U.S. Remember to be mindful of how much and how often you give this to your pet.
Pack of Tennis Balls or a Small Toy
A pack of tennis balls or a small toy can help alleviate boredom and can increase your pet's exercise and physical activity. A small toy can help your pet stay entertained and help keep their spirits up.
Poop Bag Rolls
In an emergency situation, maintaining hygiene and sanitation is crucial. In some emergency situations, such as evacuations or sheltering, there may be regulations or guidelines in place that require pet owners to clean up after their pets. Poop bags enable compliance with such rules, ensuring the safety and health of all involved.
Extra Leash
In an emergency, you may need to quickly evacuate your home or area. An extra leash can be essential for safely and securely guiding and controlling your pet. A leash also provides a sense of security and safety for both the pet and the pet owner. Emergencies can be stressful for pets, causing them to become agitated or anxious. An extra leash can be used to securely restrain an agitated or anxious pet.
Small Fleece Blanket
Familiar items like a fleece blanket provide comfort and a sense of security to pets, especially in stressful and unfamiliar environments during emergencies. Fleece blankets offer insulation and warmth, which can be cruicial in various emergency scenarios. The blanket can also serve as padding or bedding where your pet can have a comfortable and clean place to rest.
Optional: Fireproof Duffel
A fireproof duffel can help preserve valuables and help protect all the items in your kit. I am listing this as something that is helpful but not necessary because of the price. You can buy one for 50 dollars or more on amazon. It is completely up to the pet owner whether they would like this or not. Otherwise, a large drawstring bag or backpack will work just fine.
Optional: Happy Hoodie
Another item that is optional to include is a happy hoodie. A happy hoodie is a type of pet accessory designed to help reduce stress and anxiety in pets, particularly dogs. I am listing this as something that can be helpful but not necessary. This is because it is up to what the pet owner thinks is best. If you have a pet that is easily anxious, then this will make a beneficial addition to your kit.
